چکیده

Hasselmo et al. 2 INTRODUCTION Behavioral data indicates a role for parahippocampal regions in memory guided behavior in both spatial navigation tasks (Hagan et al., 1992) and matching tasks (Otto and Eichenbaum, 1992; Tang et al., 1997). Physiological data shows the patterns of activity in parahippocampal regions during performance of these tasks (Young et al., 1997; Suzuki et al., 1997; Frank et al., 2000) and also illustrates the cellular physiological properties which could be important for memory function (Klink and Alonso, 1997; Fransen et al., 2001).

Investigating the Effect of Music on Spatial Learning in a Virtual Reality Task

Background: Spatial learning and navigation is a fundamental cognitive ability consisting of multiple cognitive components. Despite intensive efforts conducted with the assistance of virtual reality technology and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) modality, the music effect on this cognition and the involved neuronal mechanisms remain elusive. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the...

Human hippocampal and parahippocampal theta during goal-directed spatial navigation predicts performance on a virtual Morris water maze.

The hippocampus and parahippocampal cortices exhibit theta oscillations during spatial navigation in animals and humans, and in the former are thought to mediate spatial memory formation. Functional specificity of human hippocampal theta, however, is unclear. Neuromagnetic activity was recorded with a whole-head 275-channel magnetoencephalographic (MEG) system as healthy participants navigated ...

Navigation of a Mobile Robot Using Virtual Potential Field and Artificial Neural Network

Mobile robot navigation is one of the basic problems in robotics. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed approach is based on learning virtual parallel paths that propel the mobile robot toward the track using a multi-layer, feed-forward neural network. For training, a human operator navigates the mobile robot in ...

From biophysics to behavior: Catacomb2 and the design of biologically-plausible models for spatial navigation.

A variety of approaches are available for using computational models to help understand neural processes over many levels of description, from sub-cellular processes to behavior. Alongside purely deductive bottom-up or top-down modeling, a systems design strategy has the advantage of providing a clear goal for the behavior of a complex model. The order in which biological details are added is d...

Rightward-biased hemodynamic response of the parahippocampal system during virtual navigation

Phase reset of parahippocampal electrophysiological oscillations in the theta frequency range is said to contribute to item encoding and retrieval during spatial navigation. Although well-studied in non-human animals, this mechanism is poorly understood in humans. Previously we found that feedback stimuli presented in a virtual maze environment elicited a burst of theta power over right-posteri...
